Executive Summary
In one portion of the program, you’ll be hearing about an exciting new global project that is being done for the first time. A committee made up of Cindy Goldman, Jeff Grossman, Ryan Andrusky, and Dennis Chenoweth – all RMMG members- was formed earlier this year to explore a way to create a piece of marquetry artwork that could be donated to a place of healing. The result of their efforts is termed the “One Love” mural project. It is a collaborative effort of 75 marquetarians from 16 different countries who will each prepare a piece of art for the mural. These individual panels will each be 8” x 8” square and depict something based on the theme Make Believe. The finished work from the various artists will be assembled into one or more quilt-like murals that will be donated to Texas Children’s Hospital in Austin, Texas. The artists’ work will be completed by July next year and the mural(s) will be assembled in Cindy’s workshop during August. The exact placement of the mural(s) in the hospital will be selected to expose children and adults to the art of marquetry.
Follow up information for participants:
One Love Panel Specifications
At this moment we are asking for only one panel from each artist.
The marquetry can be whatever medium, style, etc. that you wish so long as it falls into the theme category of Make Believe. This means wood, straw, metal, shells, horn, etc. can be used as your medium.
The finished size of the panel must be 8 inches x 8 inches square (metric equivalent: 203.2mm x 203.2mm). Please be exact with your measurements as they are important for the final construction process. MDF that is ¼ inch (metric equivalent: 6.35mm) thick must be used as the substrate medium. It is available in smaller sizes from Amazon. It need not be the ultralight type, but this lighter material will reduce the weight of the final installation. We understand that the finished thickness may vary depending on the thickness of the veneer and the nature of the materials used. We will accommodate this.
Please ensure that you prepare your panel properly. A backer to help keep it from bowing/cupping, etc. and sandwiching it between boards for shipping will help ensure its survival. Once it is adhered to the panel beside the other pieces there shouldn’t be any problems.
The panels should be sanded, but do not apply a finish. Sand to a maximum grit of 180 to 220. Do not finish to a polished surface. If there are big scratches, etc. we will have to reject the piece. We will let the artist know what finish will be applied by Cindy Goldman during the final assembly process once the hospital has defined their requirements.
Letter that was sent to participants:
Fellow Marquetarians:
You are receiving this letter after showing interest in participation with the ONE LOVE project. After an exhaustive search which began in January of 2024, we are thrilled to tell you we have found a home for the ONE LOVE mural – Texas Childrens Hospital in Austin, Texas will be the recipient of this first collaboration. Our committee (Cindy Goldman, Dennis Chenoweth, Jeff Grossman, and Ryan Andrusky) had our first meeting with the team from the hospital on Tuesday, and they are as excited as we are.
This beautiful hospital is just two years old. The interior design is filled with bright, cheerful colors and art depicting different interactive fantasy environments which the children can explore. Some of the art includes Austin-specific animals such as Longhorn cows and bats (Austin has the largest colony of Mexican freetail bats outside of Mexico living under a downtown bridge). You are welcome to use those in your art if you like.
Along with the hospital, and in keeping with their existing environment, we have come up with the theme that you all will be following for your piece:
Make Believe
This theme will offer all of you a wide range of interpretation and provide an opportunity to have fun with it. We ask that there are no depictions of any “dark” worlds, or monsters, and please-nothing edgy, political, etc. should be done. This is for children. All images should invoke a joyful experience for the children and other visitors to the hospital. We encourage the use of color if you are comfortable working with dyed veneers. Also avoid the use of copyrighted figures or cartoon characters. (We don’t want to be sued by Disney!)
The hospital has asked us to consider creating two or even three panels that can be hung together or in different areas. Toward that end, we have determined a size of 8” x 8” for your art. This will also keep the art simple and hopefully not take too long.
All art should be glued up on 1/4” Ultralight MDF, finish sanded but NOT finished. We will apply finish after the panels are assembled. Each artist should sign their piece with their name, city, and country,.
Please note that pieces that are not to the correct size or not square cannot be used.
The HARD DEADLINE for submissions is July 30, 2026. All completed pieces will be shipped to:

Please don’t hesitate to write with any questions or concerns. Alternatively, you may call Cindy at 512-507-2360.
We are so grateful to have you all taking part in this effort. We are eagerly awaiting your art!
Sincerely,
Cindy, Dennis, Jeff, and Ryan
